lunchtime speedies from BBC's Africa

I have been loving the latest Attenborough BBC nature series: Africa.  The cinematography is just incredible.  These are all 15-20 minute speedies reffed loosely from the show.  If you have not seen it then check it out :)  All on iplayer right now:)

freelance art dump and a baby!

Hi all, I went freelance about 10 months ago and have been having a wonderful old life since!

I have also made a beautiful little baby girl called Martha Belle.  She is amazing and being a dad is magic so far! Here she is:)

One of the projects I have been contributing on has now been published so I can share the work from it.  I know the compositions are a little odd  in places but that's because these were all background slides and invariable had other things overlaid that were the focal points.

dragon mech

Been doing this over a few lunches.  It is a mech wrestling a dragon for my frontiersmen project.  He is really red and a bit shiny :)

Missy Malone Portrait

Hi everyone,

I have just varnished and photographed my latest finished painting.  I upped the size I work at considerably for this piece and it is 50x70cm.  I am proud of this one, it feels like a step forward for my oil painting.
This is another from a series I am working on from a shoot I did with Miss Rain Photography and Missy Malone last year. There is a bit of reflected light catching the canvas grain: I am not set up for photographing large paintings, sorry!

 close up on face

I also finished off this little piece last week.  It was done from one life session and then finished from a photo.  The fabulous moustache has long since been shaved off Dan's face :(  If you are not familiar with Dan's work then check his blog out.  Brilliant stuff: ARTSHAME

Dr Sketchy Nottingham August 2012

Hi all.

Yesterday I was graced with the presence of the most excellent Ben Newman. Ben was the guy who first took me under his wing when I started my art career a decade ago.  He is an excellent fellow and a great artist.  He also drinks a LOT of Vodka!

We went with many of the usual gang to Dr Sketchy Nottingham and had a blast!.  Scarlet and Charlotte run a brilliant event and it was great fun.

The models took most of my drawings yesterday but I got crappy photos on my phone of my best two:

This is a 10 minute of the wonderful Coco Malone.  Coco performed 3 songs for us and is supremely talented.  Magic! This drawing is compressed charcoal on newsprint.

The other piece is a whopping 20 minutes of Eliza Delight. Again this drawing is compressed charcoal on newsprint. All 3 of our performers/models were splendid yesterday!

I am just finishing up reading the Art Spirit by Thomas Henri and the book has really helped me with my work in the last few weeks: It is not to heavily involved in technique but it really helps you to clarify for yourself what you are trying to achieve in your images.  Jamie Jones had mentioned it on his blog.  If you do not know Jamie's work then check it: he is a master of digital painting.
